West Mamprusi District (MAYA)

26th Dec,2009. Is a very memorable day and date for the people of Mamprugu. And I wouldn't be surprise if is chosen as a special day for Mamprusis. It was a home calling for all Mamprusis most especially for the young ones of West Mamprugu. This grate ceremony was organized by a group called MAYA (West Mamprugu Youth Association) which was said to be dieing off and therefore needed attention.
A lot of dignities of Mamprugu attended the program. some of this people included; the Regional Minister Hon. S.S Nayina, the District Chief Executive Hon. Lord Sulley Zakaria, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumya, running mate of Nana Akofo Addo of the N.P.P(2008), Mba Tarana and other sub chiefs etc.
The program started very late (Ghana time). A lot of important issue where raised and every body contributed his or her ideas for the way forward of West Mamprugu.

Hon. Lord Sulley Zakaria

The District Chief Executive, Hon. Lord Sulley Zakaria, expressed his joy to the people and said that it was during the term of the N.D.C government that the MAYA was formed and that if today the N.D.C government is back to power and MAYA is back to its feet, then the people should know that the N.D.C government is a government for Mamprugu. He also called on the people to give the government a maximum co-operation for the betterment of all. He concluded by calling on the District Planner Mr. Salifu, to highlight some development projects the N.D.C government intents to bring to the area.

It was now the turn of the Regional Minister. Hon. S.S. Nayina. He assured the people that government has good plans for Mamprugu and made mention of the five bridges government intent to construct in other to link the West Mamprusi District to Wa in the Upper west Region. He assured the people of more development yet to come and therefore told them to remain come. Below is a picture of Regional Ministers, accompanied by the District Chief Executive.



Next was the turn of a delicate from the Nayiri, Mba Tarana, he also assured the youth that the Nayiri was ready to support them in every thing and therefore advised them to see each other as brothers and sisters and do away with alcoholism and drugs since that was the only way to achieve in life. He also advised the youth to put away their political differences and see to the development of Mamprugu.

West Mamprusi District Assembly

The West Mamprusi District is one of 45 new districts created in 1988 under the Government of Ghana’s decentralization and local government reform policy. Carved out of the old Gambaga District in the Northern Region. The district capital is Walewale, which lies on the Tamale-Bolgatanga trunk road, approximately 68 miles away from Tamale.


The district is bordered to the north by Builsa, Kassena-Nankana and Bolgatanga districts, in the Upper East Region; to the south west by Gonja, Tolon-Kumbungu and Savelugu district in the Northern Region; to the west by the Sissala and Wa districts; and to the east by East Mamprusi and Gushiegu-Karaga Districts.

West Mamprusi District is one of the thirteen (13) Administrative Districts in the Northern Region of Ghana with Walewale as its capital. The district is located roughly within longitudes 0°35’W and 1°45’W and Latitude 9°55’N and 10°35’N.

It has a total land area of 5,013 km² and shares boundaries with ten districts and two regions.

It shares boundaries with East Mamprusi and Gushiegu-Karaga districts to the East, West Gonja, Savelugu-Nanton and Tolon-Kumbungu districts to the south, Builsa, Kassena-Nankana and Bolgatanga districts (Upper East Region) to the north and Sissala and Wa district (upper West Region) to the west.

Administratively the district lies within the Northern Region, although it has strong economic and functional linkages with some major settlements in the Upper East Region like Bolgatanga and Fumbisi.

WALEWALE'S NEW LIBRARY

Very soon the West Mamprusi District will be getting a new library which will help in promoting and brightening the minds of the people of the Community, especially to students.

over the years, students from the length and breadth of this great District has been wondering as to when the District will come to their aid with a well equiped library which will serve as home for studies especially during the holidays and for volunteers who are in the District for service.

Well, this situation is coming to an end with the new establishment of this huge library building below.
